There’s always something happening at the Silverton Gaol Museum.
On Tuesday 5th September you’re being invited to ‘come and have a cuppa with Charles!’. And stay for the sausage sizzle too!
Between 9am and 1pm Tuesday morning the Gaol Museum is celebrating the 140th ‘birthday‘ of the founding of Broken Hill. And of Charles Rasp, considered the founder.
As a boundary rider employed on then Mount Gipps station, Charles Rasp staked a first mining claim with David Poole and David James, a couple of tank sinkers, on the broken ‘hill’ that is now the heavily mined Line of Lode in Broken Hill city.
Moreover, after advising his ‘boss’ George McCulloch of the claim, with McCulloch and five others, who also made mining claims on the hill, Rasp became part of a ‘Syndicate of Seven’ that launched BHP, Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited.
The Gaol Museum has a wonderful photographic portrait of Charles Rasp, just recently restored.
So pop in earlier to the Gaol Museum and have a cuppa, or come later and enjoy the sausage sizzle.
Take some fabulous selfies with Charles. Then go for a Silverton wander and explore other museums, the pub, the bakery, and while you’re at it, say g’day to the camel farm.
Entry fee for everyone at the Gaol Museum on Tuesday morning is $3. If you’re there for lunch, that will be an extra $3 (but the sizzling is first class!).
